<div dir="ltr">All garmin devices sold first since 2016 block free unicode maps. So it's not the maps by mkgmap are corrupt - but garmins copyright protection is wrong. you may try to install the map via Basecamp/Mapinstaller. I would not be surprised to find that Garmin reduces the support for the old format. It may even happen without intention.<br>

the Zumo XT is the latest Garmin product and it supports NTU maps - so, yes I suppose unicode is fully supported. Is there a way for me to double-check that?<br>

are you sure that the device supports unicode maps? Note the last sentence in the description of the code-page option:<br>
--code-page=number<br>
Specify which international character set is to be used. Only 8 bit<br>
character sets are supported so you have to specify which code page you<br>
want to use. It is entirely dependent on the device firmware which code<br>
pages are supported.<br>
