One contains only the minor contours, the other one the major and medium. Then you can switch the layers on and off individually in the GPS. For srtm2osm I use the options "-large -cat 100 20 -step 10 -bounds1 ...". For the splitter I use the options "--mapid=21000001 --mixed=yes --max-nodes=5000000".
