Yes, here's my Germany topo map:

I use two different styles to make two SRTM maps with different family 
IDs. One contains only the minor contours, the other one the major and 
medium. Then you can switch the layers on and off individually in the GPS.

For srtm2osm I use the options "-large -cat 100 20 -step 10 -bounds1 ...".

For the splitter I use the options "--mapid=21000001 --mixed=yes 
--max-nodes=5000000".
