Dear Dermot, the "triangle artifacts" have to do with the multipolygon code. There is a comment by someone saying //with this line commented we get triangles, when uncommented some areas disappear // at least in mapsource, on device itself looks OK. The multiploygon code "connects" the inner ways with the outer way by two additional ways. These should in theory be two identical ways of opposite direction, but it seems that something breaks in the display on the device unless these ways differ slightly. The "slight difference" shows up as triangles ... I'm still searching the cause of the "flooded islands" ...
