[mkgmap-dev] != not working in rule

For some tests, I have included the line
|highway!=residential & name ~ '[Ee]strada .*' { deletealltags }|
in my lines style file, but mkgmap complains about "Invalid rule 
expression". Without ! it works fine. Shouldn't it work?
