I see the same with old and new GPSmap devices.
On old devices (which are really slow compared with new devices),
searching for POI is really fast.
On new devices, the search is slow and get's slower with every
additional installed map, even if this is disabled.

But what is also visible: on the old device, what was found is limited,
on new devices everything is found. Some people playing with modified
indexes came to the conclusion, that it looks like old devices uses the
index of a map to search for POI, while new devices go through the data
of all installed maps. So depending on the number of POI your map have,
the search is slower or faster.
